Finding sources of local family fun has become even more important to families on the go as the cost of fuel rises to all-time highs.

Normally around this time of year a lot of families plan for weekend trips to their favorite summer spots, but with the approaching summer months the price of gas is estimated to go even higher. It’s a great time to reacquaint yourself with what kinds of entertainment options are available much closer to home.

One thing that I’ve taken for granted in the past in my own community is the abundance of museums and historical sites. If you’re fortunate enough to live in a historic area you shouldn’t have to look very far to find exhibits and events that focus on the history of the community.

Museums
It used to be that most children found museums boring. Even some adults feel that way, but more and more museums are becoming more creative and interactive in the way they present their exhibits. Rather than simply sit in glass cases, some museum items are now kept fully functioning and are demonstrated. You can see a spinning wheel in action or hear what a Victrola sounds like. You can watch period actors build a log Privat Sex or watch a working metalsmith use a bellows to stoke a fire.

Some art museums now offer childrens programs with make-and-take crafts that tie into the current exhibit. My children made “quilts” out of paper squares and triangles at our local art museum to celebrate the recent quilt exhibit. The children got to learn about, and appreciate this wonderful form of folk art in a hands-on way that they won’t soon forget. Charcoal drawing, watercolor, and needlework are all art forms that museums are now letting children explore for themselves as they present these types of exhibits to their communities.

Historical Homes/Sites
Most communities rich in history have a day, or days during the spring or summer months in which they celebrate that Teen Sexgirls During this time it’s possible to tour old historical homes and public buildings. Historical sites can be found just about everywhere. A railroad station, a library, an old courthouse, an old homestead; These are places that endure the test of time. Touring them can offer rich and interesting history lessons especially if they are sites that are still being utilized today.

Fairs and Festivals
Annual events like music festivals, seasonal festivals, faith-based festivals, and school fairs also celebrate a communities history and offer some close-to-home, affordable fun for your whole family. Lots of these events happen during the warmer months so they can be held outdoors. There can be games, food, and vendors selling local fare, and handcrafted items. In addition to getting the family out for some fun, it’s a good way to find out what other kinds of events are going on in your community.

In addition to your own community be sure to check surrounding communities to see what they have going on. It’s a nice way to get a change of scenery without having to venture too far from home and still have affordable local family fun.
